Abstract: Monitor project aims at monitoring ionospheric events in order to evaluate their impact on European GNSS Systems. It includes a network of ionospheric scintillation monitoring stations covering different latitude regions and its routine data collection. Also, relevant products on ionosphere behavior and its perturbations are generated and made available. This poster presents the project’s overview and how it allows supporting SBAS systems, including a comprehensive analysis of EGNOS ionospheric model performance during days 75-82, 2015 (comprising St. Patrick’s major geomagnetic storm during March 17th, 2015). Indeed, a detailed assessment has been done considering two sources of ionospheric truths: (1) GNSS dSTEC observations and (2) direct VTEC measurements from JASON2 altimeter. The main result is that the EGNOS VTEC appeared clearly underestimated during the positive storm phase and overestimated during the negative phase, with associated relative errors which reached up to more than 100%. Such degradation led to EGNOS APV-I Performance Degradation (< 80% of Service Area).

Abstract: Trajectory based operations (TBO) are one of the key enablers of the future air traffic management (ATM) paradigm. Both ATM modernizationprograms (SESAR in Europe and NextGen in the United States of America) advocate that the aircraft operators shall be the owners of their trajectories and that proper network negotiation mechanisms must be established to address traffic congestion issues, conflicting trajectories etc. Furthermore, reducing environmental footprint is a challenge for all aviation stakeholders. In this context, aircraft trajectory optimization plays an important role in reducing operational costs; at the same time more environmentally friendly procedures can be obtained. Such an optimization process can be formulated as nonlinear constrained optimal control problem. Analytical solutions to this problem for realistic aircraft operations are seldom obtained, being numerical methods widely used to tackle it. In this short course, the basic background in optimal control theory, applied to aircraft trajectories, will be given along with several realistic examples, showing the potential benefits of such techniques in the context of a more automated and strategically planned ATM.

Abstract: Here we presented for the first time an unprecedented mission using an unmanned aerial system (UAS) for characterizing diel changes on suspended particulate matter (SPM) in nearshore waters of the Saint Lawrence Estuary. Error on UAS-derived SPM estimates due to variations on sensor viewing geometry and tidal range was also investigated. UAS surveys were conducted on October 1 2013 using a quadcopter (Draganfly) having a remote control video-color camera. Aerial missions had a frequency of 1 h, were performed between 10:30 am and 14:30 pm, and coincided with concurrent in situ optical measurements of turbidity and chromophoric dissolved organic matter. SPM concentration was computed from turbidity-SPM relationships and UAS-derived standardized RGB ratios. Preliminary results show consistency between UAS and in situ estimates of SPM, and highlight two main benefits of UAS for mapping high frequency variability of SPM along the coast: 1) the larger spatial coverage with respect to in-water instruments, and 2) the greater temporal resolution and/or lower cost of observations with respect to high spatial resolution spaceborne or airborne sensors.

Abstract: The impact of aircraft noise on communities living near the airports can be reduced by improving aircraft noise emissions (mainly due to power-plant and aerodynamic noise) but also by designing new optimizedflight procedures. These noise abatement procedures are based on preferential routings (in order to avoid populated areas) and/or enhanced vertical flight path profiles. The optimization of such procedures may deal with several conflicting objectives, like different noise sensitive locations and also aircraft operating costs. This presentation will first give an overview on different strategies that are being used nowadays aiming at reducing the noise footprint over populated areas. Then, the research done by the author in the field will be presented, showing a trajectory optimization framework which is able to compute the optimal departure procedures for a given airport. This problem is formulated as a constrained optimal control problem, and the original infinite-dimensional problem is converted into a finite-dimensional one by discretizing the dynamics of the aircraft and the rest of the objective and constraint equations. Then, a Non Linear Programming (NLP) problem is obtained and it can be solved by commercial numerical optimization packages. As a result, not only the best horizontal trajectory is obtained but also the vertical and speed profiles of the aircraft, considering as well, the optimal flap/slat transitions and a thrust cutback altitude for the departure procedures. Besides that, a multi-objective optimization strategy that employs goal, lexicographic-egalitarian and hierarchical optimization techniques will be also presented. This presented methodology aims at better assessing the design of site-specific noise abatement procedures. Finally, an illustrative example is given with the design of the East departures at Girona airport, in Catalonia (Spain) for two type of aircraft and for night and day periods.
